WIP: Combat! TV Series - COMPLETED |
Lead | |
|
Hello folks, I haven't found any custom covers to my liking of this old tv series, so I though I would try my hand at making some. This is what I came up with. It contains roughly 50 layers of items. Do I need to add anything else or take away something? All comments welcome

I personally like the second one with the expanding title. Nice thought about the progressing ranks at the top. :) I like that idea.

Really nice work on this cobbbbbb! A good Combat! cover is sorely needed.
I like them both, although in IMHO the second one with the spanning spine looks just a bit plain to me. If you dropped the word Combat! down a bit and added a spanning picture of Hanley and Saunders above the title, that would make it perfect in my mind. Whatever you ultimately decide, are you planning to post your end results on one of cover sites. That would be greatly appreciated by all us Combat! fans. |

This could be just in the preview pics, but it looks like none of your type is anti-aliased--they've all got blocky edges. Might want to fix that.
Also, the image on the back of the 3rd preview pic has a ragged bottom outline, where it should be flat across. Just being nitpicky, but "God is in the details". Good idea with the spine-rank-increase-thing, btw. |

Re: Spines | ||

I was toying around with the idea of adding a photo to the spine, just need to find a hi res somewhere. If someone has the scan of the back of season 5 both covers, I need them. Mine has crayon marks all over them (gotta love those darn kids
Yea, I will post for all who want them when I'm done. |

Canaryfarmer, It's just the pics. Everything looks good actual size. I reduced the pixels to keep the pics small enough to load fast for everyone.

There are scans of the Season 5 covers available at the "gen" site. The thread is called "Combat Seasons 1-5 Box Sets w/ previews" by johncap. Originally that thread only had artwork for Asian boxsets for Season 5, but scans of the two Season 5 American retail covers were later added to the thread in a post on 04/03/06.

I really like the spanning spine with the picture.

Re: Spines | ||

I also think the spanning picture is a great look. One other thought, however. I think that for the front and back camouflage pattern that you should go back to your original "all green" camouflage, rather than using the "tan, grey and green" camouflage shown in the latest version. The "tan, grey and green" camouflage pattern wasn't used by the US Army until sometime in the 1980s. Also, again IMHO, the all green version presents a nice contrast with the black and white of the spanning spine and the black and white pictures that will be on the back covers of Seasons 1-4. If you think the contrast between the back and white spine and the "all green" camouflage is too extreme, you could always give the spanning spine picture a slight green tint to reduce the contrast. All in all, this is looking great.

Re: Spines | ||

Hey Prawn1, that is the same camo I used. It's just the opacity and fill are at 100% here, and in the first one, it's at 50% Op & 90% Fill. I moved it up because when I did the spine I forgot to reduce it, so just being lazy, I increased the others. I will go back to my original op and fill when I finalize everything. Thanks for the input, it is much appreciated. Now I am just waiting on permission to use that art work, before moving foward. If anyone has any other thoughts or ideas, I'm all ears.

Re: Spines | ||

Just hope this bit of information will not upset the apple cart so to speak, but Full Camouflage uniforms were not worn in WWII, and neither in the Korean war. They did not fully appear as a full combat uniform until the Viet Nam war. Almost all uniforms worn by the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War were either Olive Drab or Khaki in color. Now you know the rest of the story. But I still like the covers anyway.

Re: Spines | ||

That's a shame. Hopefully you can find another picture that you can use. There are lots of good pictures/photographs in Jo Davidsmeyer's book "Combat! A Viewers Guide to The WWII TV Series", which you can find at www.jodavidsmeyer.com/combat/book.html. If you are a Combat! fan it is well worth owning in any event. What I don't know is whether or not there would be any issue with using the any of the pictures/photos in the book without special permission. Good luck, and let us know if you come up with anything.

Re: Update..... | ||

here is an update on the spine
![]() Should I stick with the yellow lettering, or can you see the green ok? I removed the camo pattern, thanks for the heads up HS47 :-), tried to get the background as close to olive drap as I could. I used a combination olives to come up with RGB Value 116,128,79. If it needs to be darker let me know. |

Re: Update..... | ||

I would offer both versions of the cover, one camouflaged and one solid green, but change the green lettering to yellow, it tends to blend in with the solid background. Or you could do the lettering in an off white.

Re: Update | ||

cobbbbbb, I think the Updated Spine looks terrific just as you have it! While I liked the original camo, the solid olive also looks good and, as others have noted, is probably more time period authentic. Also, IMHO, if you go with a background camo on the spine given the picture you have chosen, it may look too busy. I also think the green lettering on COMBAT! as you now have it on the spine stands out just fine, and is a nice contrast with the yellow lettering on Season/Mission information. The only possible change that I might suggest is changing the color of the COMBAT! on the front cover to the same yellow with black border used on the spine for the Season/Mission information.
Great work on this!! Please let us know when and where you plan on releasing the covers one you have finalized them, and thank you in advance for sharing your creativity and hard work. |

Re: Update | ||

Ok guys, here are a couple of revisions. I wont include the camo as I have deleted that layer, and apparently I also deleted the source, dummy me
![]() ![]() I also added a little border around the edge. I think it makes the whole thing stand out better, but I don't know. without: ![]() with: ![]() I will finish the spines tomorrow and finalize everything. I hope to be finished and have them uploaded somewhere by this weekend, so I can start on my MASH series. Do you see a theme developing here? |
